Understanding Australian Slang and How To alk Australian

Here's a classic example on how to speak Australian:

And to help you out we've got a bit of a glossary below for some of the typical stuff you'll encounter:

Air con = Air conditioning/conditioner

Banger = Sausage

Bathers = Swimming suit

Bikie = Someone who rides a Harley Davidson, but most commonly used to describe the member of a bikie gang.

Bikkie = Cookie (short for biscuit)

Boardies = Slang for boardshorts, worn by surfers

B.Y.O. = Bring your own (alcohol/drinks). There are some unlicensed restaurants where you bring your own wine (sometimes beer) into their establishment.

Corkage = The fee a B.Y.O. restaurant will often charge for each bottle (eg wine) you bring into a restaurant that wasn’t bought on the premises.

Dunny = Toilet

Esky = Ice cooler

Exxy = Expensive

Good on ya = Great job or well done.

Hard yakka = Hard work

Heaps = A lot.

Knackered = Pooped; Tired; Exhausted

Loo = Toilet; Restroom

Maccas = Nickname for McDonald’s

Mate’s rates = Discounted price for, e.g. work services, from a friend.

Pash = Passionate kiss

Postie = Postal worker

Rego = Vehicle registration

Sanger = Sandwich

Schooner = Pronounced “skooner,” it’s a large beer glass, generally holding a pint or more.

“She’ll be right” = “Everything’s going to be OK.”

Spewin’ = Very angry: “He’s so mad, he’s spewin’”

Stubbie = Bottle of beer

Thongs = Flip-flops.

Wanker = A ridiculous person

Yewy = U-turn
